Job Description

Data analytics R&D group is seeking a numerate computational geophysicist with strong mathematical background and experience in developing algorithms to seismic propagation and complex source models to work in the area of mining induced seismicity and microseismics.  The group’s objectives include the application of standard and development of new earthquake source models to large data sets of seismic signals as related to the extraction of minerals underground in the mining industry.  Characteristic understanding of signal quality, source volume behaviour and path effects in anisotropic conditions are examined as part of the R&D efforts.

Duties and responsibilities include:

·       Development of new or enhanced methods of processing and interpretation of passive seismic data sets, especially complex source mechanisms.

·       Development and/or implementation of advanced wave propagation algorithms for imaging microseismic signals.

·       Develop and implement advanced principles of earthquake seismic data analysis, including waveform and velocity inversion, attenuation calculations, characterization of sources of microseismic activity.

  • Work closely in a team environment to find solutions to challenging data sets.
  • Publish, present results and research and present findings at conferences, workshops, and to clients.
  • The position will be located at ESG Solutions head office in Kingston, Ontario. 

Qualifications and Experience:

·       MSc or PhD in Geophysics, Seismology or related field.

·       Experience in R&D of 1-2 years preferred. 

·       Evidence of critical thinking and technical writing required (publications).

·       Knowledge of Java, Python, Fortran, C++ and/or other programming languages an asset.

·       Ability to travel throughout North America and internationally.
