Geophysical Specialist

Job Description

ESG is looking for a Geophysical Specialist will provide higher level analysis and interpretation on microseismic data related to Energy and Mining industry applications. The Specialist will work closely with multiple groups including, Data Processing, Analysts, Wireline, Field Services, S/W, R&D and Project Management teams in order to ensure deadlines are met and client deliverables are optimized. This position requires an individual with a strong analytical and reasoning skills; someone who challenges the status quo and is able to translate geophysical or technical information into value-add insights for our clients.

Job Duties

  • Project (site) set up, configuration and optimization
  • Higher order microseismic Data Processing QC and review (picking, event location, source parameter calculations)
  • For recurring projects (Resmap, ISM, MGS) – Monitor site(s) performance and health and work with the Geophysical Analysts and/or Data Processing teams to update (optimize) site parameters as needed (prc files, sensor files, triggering, etc.)
  • Higher level data interpretation and analysis, including but not limited to, Phase 2, Phase 3, Tilt, SMTI and Tomography reports
  • Report Writing
  • On-call response – evening, weekends and holidays
  • Integration of various data sets – Microseismics, geological/geophysical, tilt, fiber, treatment data, etc. 
  • Modeling/Feasibility Analyses and array designs. 
  • Participate in and (often) lead client meetings/presentations
  • Perform advanced microseismic analyses – Seiswatch calibration, SMTI picking and inversions, 3DVM building, Hazard analysis, Tomography, DPA, etc.
  • Provide support to ESG sales by giving technical sales presentations to potential clients, input on potential analyses for existing clients and estimates of level of effort required for advanced analysis
  • Mentoring of Geophysical Analysts and Data Processors
  • Potential for short term travel for client meetings and/or conferences

Requirements

  • B.Sc or higher Geophysics, Earth Sciences or related field
  • P.Geo, P.Eng, P.Geoph or the ability to obtain said designations is considered an asset
  • M.Sc in Geophysics, Earth Sciences or related field considered an asset
  • 4+ years of work experience. Field experience is considered an asset 
  • Able to work independently and as part of a team
  • Work under guidance of managers and project managers
  • Effective communication (oral and written)
  • Ability to continuously learn
  • Ability to use microseismic systems and installation tools
  • Proficiency in MS Office, ESG software suite,
  • Ability to program is an asset
  • Good problem solving skills
  • High level of critical and logical thinking, analysis, and/or reasoning to identify underlying principles, reasons, or facts
  • Knowledge of the principles of geophysics and microseismics
  • Ability to learn new computer software is essential. 
  • Possess excellent organizational skills
